Who’s running for re-election?

by Deena Winter

Most of the attention is on who, if anybody, will run against Mayor Chris Beutler in the spring.
But don’t forget, there are also four City Council seats up for grabs. And hello, the balance of power on the council could shift, depending upon the outcome, since two of the seats are now held by Republicans and two by Democrats.
The people up for re-election are Doug Emery, Jonathan Cook, Jon Camp and John Spatz. Emery and Cook are Democrats; Camp and Spatz are Republicans. Their seats are district seats, they each represent a quadrant of the city.
Emery, who represents northeast Lincoln, sounds as if he’s going to run again.
“I have not made a final decision but I am leaning that way,” he said via email.
Cook said he will announce his intentions in January.
Camp — as everyone probably knows by now — is still weighing whether to run against Mayor Chris Beutler, although the hour is getting late and it will be difficult to catch up to Beutler in terms of fund raising. Camp represents southeast Lincoln.
And Spatz, who represents northwest Lincoln, said, “I don’t have anything concrete to tell you.” He sounds a little bit like he might be thinking about doing something else with his life though.

I disagree that it would be difficult for Camp to catch Beutler on fundraising. Camp could drop a half-million of his own money into the race without breaking a sweat.
